Today we attended Alzheimer Society of B.C.'s Breakfast to Remember with MC Dawna Friesen. The breakfast was held to increase awareness and support from the business community for this horrible disease.
Akhurst is proud to be a donor and supporter of the Alzheimer’s Society. As of today, there are over half a million Canadians living with dementia. Approximately 25,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. By 2031, that number is expected to rise to 937,000 Canadians living with the disease, an increase of 66 per cent! Our healthcare system is not equipped to deal with this rapid increase, and therefore funds are so much in need. The Alzheimer’s Society is such a valuable resource for families dealing with a loved one with the disease. They provide many services to support these families in addition to funding studies and medical trials.
This cause is one that is close to our heart as one of our previous owners, Bruce Akhurst (Gen 3) is currently living with dementia and Spud Akhurst (Gen 2) passed away after suffering for over 10 years with the disease. The assistance provided by the Alzheimer’s Society is critical to the health of the caregivers in the support they receive.
There is no cure for dementia today but with the research that the Alzheimer’s Society and other groups are doing, we are ever hopeful.
