Job Summary:

Based in our Delta head office and reporting directly to the President, the Human Resources Manager champions human resources best practices to promote a values-driven, high performance, customer-centric culture that emphasizes a commitment to quality, productivity, excellent customer service, and the recruitment and development of a superior workforce.  This position is accountable for the development, implementation and coordination of human resource programs, policies and procedures to support the delivery of Akhurst’s strategic priorities anchored by the core values.  The position scope includes workforce and succession planning, recruitment, onboarding and training, employee performance development, employee communications, compensation, and engagement. Overall, the Human Resources Manager ensures that Akhurst has the right people in the right seats.

How you will be successful as Akhurst’s Human Resources Manager:

Workforce Planning and Recruitment

  • In alignment with the corporate strategic plan, anticipate future workforce needs through analysis of employee productivity and operational needs, maintaining up-to-date job descriptions as required. Make workforce planning recommendations to the President on a timely and proactive basis;
  • Develop and maintain a succession plan for all key positions in the organization. Identify high potential employees and work collaboratively with managers to ensure development and retention of these employees to fulfill the established succession plans; and
  • In alignment with the Akhurst recruiting process and relevant human rights and employment standards legislation, successfully fill vacant positions by attracting and screening candidates that fit the ideal candidate profile for the position. Handle the full cycle recruitment process from identifying the ideal candidate profile to securing a signed offer.

Onboarding and Training

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive onboarding program to maximize new hire engagement and productivity. Establish a customized onboarding schedule for the first 1-2 weeks of each new hire’s employment, checking in with new employees at regular intervals in the first year of employment; and
  • Oversee ongoing employee training and development to maximize employee productivity, and support employee development, growth, and retention. As required, may recommend external education to support employees in improving their job performance.

Employee Communication and Support

  • Receive all employee enquiries nationally, either handling or re-directing employees as appropriate;
  • Maintain a comprehensive Employee Handbook to ensure it accurately reflects the company’s HR policies and procedures and is kept current to the business needs and employment legislation, drafting modifications as required for approval by the President. Ensure employee understanding and compliance to Handbook;
  • Maintain partnership with corporate travel agency to handle employee business travel bookings (i.e. air, accommodation, car), securing preferred corporate rates / contracts with hotels; and
  • Manage employee communication as required, including announcement of new employees and employee departures as appropriate, promotions, operational changes, and human resource policies, procedures and programs.

Employee Performance and Development

  • Maintain an effective performance development program, which identifies quarterly operational and development goals and successfully tracks achievement and drives performance;
  • Oversee the administration of the program and collaborates with managers to ensure each employee has an up to date performance development plan;
  • Coach and advise managers as needed in handling performance challenges. Proactively identify and escalate employee productivity and performance issues.   Draft performance improvement documents as needed and support leaders in managing employee performance;
  • Manage the employee termination process for employees deemed unfit for Akhurst or their position, in alignment with relevant human rights and employment standard legislation. Liaise with employment lawyers as appropriate, including preparation of the termination documentation, assisting the manager with the termination meeting, drafting and sending company communications as required;
  • Directly handle complex employee leaves of absence, liaising with third parties including employee assistance program and disability management firm. Successfully resolve employee absence issues in alignment with Akhurst corporate values; and
  • Directly resolve/mediate employee conflict with the goal of maintaining a workplace culture that aligns with Akhurst corporate values.


  • Develop, recommend, and maintain a comprehensive compensation program, in alignment with Akhurst’s compensation strategy;
  • Coordinate annual compensation review, working in collaboration with the Payroll & HR Coordinator and the President to ensure compensation adjustments and bonuses are awarded in alignment with employee performance, the established compensation model and within budgetary parameters; and
  • Maintain an up-to-date compensation model through regular job analysis and external market compensation comparison as needed to maintain internal and external equity.


  • Develop, implement and manage strategically aligned employee engagement programs and activities including wellness programs, recognition programs, value alignment initiatives, and corporate social responsibility programs to support a highly-engaged workforce; and
  • Survey employees regularly to assess engagement level and develop and oversee action plans to maximize employee engagement and maintain open communication channels.

As the ideal candidate:

  • You have a university degree or college diploma with a focus in business administration, human resources management;
  • You hold a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation in good standing;
  • You have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in human resources management, preferably as a generalist;
  • You have intermediate to advanced level proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint);
  • You possess strong leadership, collaboration and team building skills with a track record of building strong, enduring relationships with all levels;
  • You are passionate in providing superb customer service, with well-honed interpersonal skills and excellent written/oral communication skills;
  • You have demonstrated initiative, combined with exceptional follow-up skills. You are highly motivated and energetic, conveying a positive attitude;
  • You have a proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in a professional and diplomatic manner;
  • You have proven time management skills, including the ability to manage shifting priorities;
  • You are exceptional in your ability to work autonomously and proactively; yet, you work effectively as a team player;
  • You have demonstrated perseverance in working through complex problems to satisfactory resolution within timelines; and
  • You have a thirst for knowledge, and you are always looking to learn and grow.
